EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think - Albert Einstein

Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute

Ghana Atomic Energy Commission

I started my journey at the Department of Food Science and Radiation Processing (DFSRP) as a National Service Person. During this time, my interest in research was kindled. Together with the team I worked under, we researched into the use of gamma irradiation to extend the shelf life of a variety of locally grown crops. These works were aimed at helping to manage the postharvest losses in Ghana.

I later, during my period of graduate studies, was appointed a trainee research scientist where my ability to identify issues, formulate solutions, carry out independent research and lead a team were evaluated. Upon successful completion of my graduate (masters) studies and haven proved myself as capable, I was appointed an assistant research scientist at the newly created Radiation Technology Centre (RTC). Here, the skills learnt during my period as a national service person and a trainee research scientist were crucial in achieving set goals.

During my period of work as an assistant research scientist, I led teams that worked on crops like yam, cowpea and some vegetables like carrot, cabbage and lettuce. We were focused on using gamma irradiation to inhibit sprouting, reduce insect infestation and to control microbial populations. I was confirmed as a full research scientist on completion of my doctor of philosophy studies.

Currently, my research focuses on highly perishable vegetables and crops. Research is designed to understand the mechanisms behind their high perishability and to formulate ready-to-use solutions. I am also involved in product development.

Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences

University of Ghana

I have been engaged as a part-time lecturer at the Department of Nuclear Agriculture and Radiation Processing of the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences of the University of Ghana since 2010.

During this time, I have tutored students in Radiation Application in Postharvest Systems, Food and Industrial Biotechnology and Food Microbiology. Students in this department are engaged in masters and doctorate level research. My focus has been to initially expose the students to these areas and to inspire them to want to use the knowledge acquired for further research.

Program for Biosafety Systems

Since March 2013, I have led the Ghana team of the Program for Biosafety Systems (PBS) as the Country Coordinator.

PBS works with stakeholders to develop and implement science-based, functional biosafety systems that ultimately: Expand producer choice, inspire consumer confidence, facilitate trade, and promote agricultural R&D.

WestPoint Consulting

During my time as an undergraduate student I took on many part-time jobs to ensure that I was industry ready. One such job was as an enumerator for WestPoint Consulting. This job require me to interview customers of various banking institutions on their satisfaction of service received. This information gathered was then collated, together with other data, for the Ghana Banking Awards.

Focus 94.3 FM

As part of the last team of broadcasters at the ever-popular Conti FM, I transitioned to Focus FM, which is the authorized campus radio of KNUST, as a broadcaster. It felt great being able to reach a wide audience with music and with interesting programming. Interestingly, I was in the studio when we first tried out a phone in session!!
